New friendships and reminders of childhood meals have made me hungry for “home” cooking. These days I look at ingredients and think of Middle Eastern dishes. Today I decided to make Uroug. These fritters were so tempting to me as a child that I often got in trouble for sneaking the fritters when mom wasn’t looking. She would make a large batch and have them cooling on wire rack and I would sneak in, take one fritter top it with Amaba “pickled mangoes”, a slice of tomato and then top it with another fritter thus Uroug sandwich. So you can see why mom could never make enough of these when I was around.
20. Our Lord Shiva! Protect us and bless us with your lotus feet. Guard us and bless me with your Lotus feet which is the end all. May your divine feet, the Lotus feet are also the origin of all living things and save us! Your divine feet, that offer to living beings, the benefits in this present birth and in the next birth too. May your divine feet, that absorb everything and save us, may the feet which are unknown to Brahma and Vishnu save us, May your divine feet, which make us your servants only to shower on us your bliss and to save me! The water sanctified in this month Margazhi, which is the divine grace personified. May the sacred water with which we take holy bath, save us.
As Ramadan is the month of spiritual training for Muslims, the lessons learned during Ramadan are carried forward. Muslims help their fellow Muslim brothers and sister who are less fortunate by giving charity and mandatory Zakat-al Fitr. Before the Eid prayer begins, every Muslim who is able must pay Zakat al-fitr, an alms for the month of Ramadan. The Zakat al-Fitr can be given at any time during the month of Ramadan and is often given early, so the recipients can use it for Eid purchases. Zakat al-Fitr is usually collected at the mosque and than distributed to needy local Muslims prior to the start of the Eid prayer. The Zakat al-Fitr equates to about 2 kilograms or 4.4 lb of a basic foods which include, wheat, barley, dates, raisins, etc.or its cash equivalent.
Mental Concerns Fasting could severely impair your mental faculties. It can cause fatigue, even hallucinations. Its no secret that ascetics and monks would often see visions, revelations, etc. while out in the desert on fast. While some will chalk this up to contact with the spiritual realm, it is also a fact that going without nourishment for days at a time can have many of the same psychological effects as drug use.
Here Thiru Vasagam and Thiruppalliyezhchchi are so composed as though sung by lasses observing Margazhi penance. Walking up early, fresh morning during the Month of Margazhi to worship the Lord, will definitely invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva. Interestingly Thiru Annamalai is one of the five shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva representing Fire. Now a days people throng in more and more numbers in this shrine and make circum ambulation of the Holy Mountain Thiru Annamalai. ( Arunachala) In the list of devotees Europeans and white people also included. The classic “Thiruvembavai” assumes the form of Dialogue between a group of Lasses and one of their friends, who are all Shiva Devotees observing Penance, during the Happay Ramadan Mubarak of Margazhi.
MAS Youth is continuing their annual In the Shade of ramadan Video series. Everyday, during the blessed month of Ramadan, a short video will be posted on youtube for our learning pleasure.
Those with dominate Aquarius in their charts may find that things aren’t going as expected around, Friday, July 13th with Uranus turning retrograde. Please, be gentle with your Aquarius friends around this time. Also, Mercury’s retrograde will begin on July 14th (July 15th Europe and east), and that could cause problems for those with dominate Virgo, Gemini, and Leo. Mercury will be doing his whole retrograde in Leo this time, and that could really slow down progress for most of us for the next few weeks. Lions love to rest. Keep expectations low for the weekend of July 13th, and if you do any traveling, expect delays. There could also be problems with authority figures this weekend, so by all means, drive the speed limit.
Prepare meals Saturday and Sunday morning for the weeknights. The morning is usually when you’re the least hungry. Make as much as you can, and be sure to make large quantities so that it will last you a while.
